Douglas firs in snow, Exmoor. Much of the rare and ancient ‘Atlantic Oakwood’ that originally covered Exmoor was felled and replanted with conifer plantations after the Second World War. Successive governments were trying to decrease the UK’s reliance on imported natural resources such as timber.
